Bangabandhu’s largest mural being built in Rajshahi

The largest mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being built adjacent to the C&B Crossing area in Rajshahi city.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is constructing the country's largest mural at a cost of around Taka 5.02 crore as part of its Taka 2,993-crore project titled 'Integrated Urban Infrastructure Development in Rajshahi City'.
Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton accompanied by others concerned visited the site to see for himself its progress today (Saturday).
RCC Superintending Engineer and Project Director Nur Islam told BSS that height of the mural is 58 feet having a 50-feet height and 40-feet wide Bangabandhu photo in main part of the mural.
Terracotta works are being done on 700-feet space on both sides of the boundary wall. Gallery and landscaping will be well-decorated with super granite.
Upon completion of the construction works, the mural will be night vision with decorative electric bulbs.
Mayor Liton said the mural will inspire people to know about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib along with his life, works and laudable contribution and sacrifice to the country's independence.

Today Marks the Death Anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani
Sunday, November 17, commemorates the 48th death anniversary of the "leader of the downtrodden" (Majlum Jananeta) Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani. He passed away on this day in 1976 while undergoing treatment at the then PG Hospital (now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) in Dhaka. He was laid to rest in Santosh, Tangail. To honor his memory, elaborate programs have been organized in Dhaka and Tangail.
Maulana Bhashani was born on December 12, 1880, in Dhangara village of Sirajganj district. Nicknamed "Chega Mia," he was also widely known as "Red Maulana." Though born in Sirajganj, he spent most of his life in Santosh, Tangail. From his youth, he was deeply involved in politics and served as an advisor to the exiled government during Bangladesh's Liberation War.
A prominent figure in politics from an early age, Maulana Bhashani held significant roles, including serving as the president of the Bengal-Assam Provincial Muslim League for many years. He was one of the key leaders in forming the United Front in the 1954 elections and served as the head of the advisory council of the exiled government during the Liberation War.
Throughout his long political career, Maulana Bhashani championed the rights and welfare of the deprived, neglected, and working-class people. During times of national crisis, he united the people to lead formidable movements. Despite holding power, he was never seduced by it, maintaining a life of simplicity and humility while prioritizing national interests over personal gain.
Bhashani dedicated his life to fighting for a progressive, democratic, secular Bangladesh free from exploitation and oppression. He shared ideological unity and political camaraderie with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, making a significant contribution to the development of Bengali national identity.
To commemorate this legendary leader's death anniversary, a series of events will take place. At 7:30 AM, Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand, Vice-Chancellor of Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University, will lay a wreath at his mausoleum. At 8:00 AM, food offerings will be distributed in the mausoleum premises.
Later, at 11:00 AM, a seminar will be held in the seminar room of the university's 12-story academic building. After the Zuhr prayer, a special prayer session will be conducted at the central mosque of the university. Leaders from various political parties are also expected to visit his mausoleum in Santosh to pay their respects.
Bangladesh Garment Exports to US Increased by More Than 50pc
Bangladesh's garment exports to the US have increased by more than 50 percent in the past decade. This was taken from a report by the US Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA). Among the ten countries that export clothes to the US, China is in first place, Vietnam is in second place, and Bangladesh is in third place.
Bangladesh has made significant progress in international garment exports in the last decade, especially in the US market. During this period, Bangladesh outpaced even countries like India with its cost-effective manufacturing capacity, high-quality garments, and skilled labor force.
It can also be seen from OTEXA that Bangladesh's garment exports to the US have increased by 50.79 percent. However, according to the statistics of clothing exports to the United States from 2014 to 2023 (10 years), although China is in the first position, the export of its clothing industry has decreased by almost half in a decade. And in that place, Bangladesh and Vietnam have made a strong position. At the same time, the exports of countries like India, Pakistan, and Cambodia have also increased.
According to the information of the United States Office of Textiles and Apparel, in 2014 Bangladeshi clothing exports to the United States were 4.83 billion dollars, in 2022 this export increased to 9.73 billion dollars. However, in 2023, this continuity suddenly collapsed. That year, Bangladesh's clothing exports to the United States dropped by almost a quarter to $7.29 billion. US apparel imports declined by 22.04 percent in 2023 due to Bangladesh's apparel exports. However, overall, in that decade (from 2014 to 2023), Bangladesh's garment exports to the United States have increased by 50.79 percent.
However, in the past decade, China, South Korea, Mexico, Honduras, and Indonesia have also seen declines in apparel exports to the United States. Among them, South Korea's exports decreased by 13.31 percent, Mexico's by 24.66 percent, Honduras by 6.08 percent, and Indonesia's exports decreased by 17.99 percent.
Chief Adviser Yunus Begins Address to The Nation
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is addressing the nation today (17 November) on the completion of 100 days of the interim government.
The speech began at 7 pm and is being broadcast on Bangladesh Television and BTV World.
He is addressing the nation from his residence State Guest House Jamuna.
The interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on 8 August after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on 5 August amid a mass uprising led by students.
Titumir Students Block Railways, 2 Trains Stuck
The students of Government Titumir College blocked the roads and railway tracks in the capital's Mohakhali this morning (18 November), demanding the government upgrade the institution to a university. In this incident, 2 intercity trains on the line are stuck.
Bangladesh Railway's Dhaka Control Room confirmed the matter on Monday (November 18) around 12:30 pm.
It was informed from the control room that 2 intercity trains were stuck on the line in the Mohakhali area in the face of students' agitation. Among them, Agnibina Express to Tarakandi of Jamalpur from Dhaka and Banalata Express to Dhaka from Chapainawabganj.
Earlier, students tried to stop the Noakhali-Dhaka-bound inter-city train Upakul Express from crossing the Mohakhali railway crossing amid the blockade today. But they did not stop the train and threw bricks and stones at it. Some windows of the train were broken.
Incidentally, the students have been protesting by blocking the railway and road of Mohakhali since this morning demanding that the government Titumir College be converted into a university. As the rail communication across the country is closed due to their blockade, the movement of traffic in Mohakhali, Banani, and Jahangir Gate areas is completely blocked due to the students' position at the Mohakhali rail crossing.
Govt Job Age Limit Raised to 32: Notification Issued
The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs has issued a notification setting the maximum age limit for entry into government jobs at 32 years. The notification was issued on Monday evening, November 18.
According to the notification, it has been deemed appropriate and necessary to determine the maximum age limit for direct recruitment in government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory government authorities, public non-financial corporations, and self-governed institutions. Given the current dissolved state of Parliament, and as the President is satisfied that immediate measures are required, the ordinance has been enacted under the powers granted by Article 93(1) of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
Key Points of the Notification:
Title and Effectiveness: The ordinance will be referred to as the Maximum Age Limit for Direct Recruitment in Government Jobs Ordinance, 2024. It will take immediate effect.
Supremacy Over Existing Rules: Regardless of any existing laws, regulations, directives, or legal provisions, the terms of this ordinance will take precedence.
Age Limit for Civil Service and Other Government Jobs: For all cadres under the Bangladesh Civil Service, the maximum entry age will be 32 years. For government jobs outside the purview of the Civil Service, the maximum age limit will also be 32 years.
For positions in autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory government authorities, public non-financial corporations, and self-governed institutions where the current age limit is either 30 or up to 32 years, the new age limit will uniformly be set at 32 years.
Exemptions: Recruitment rules for defense services and law enforcement agencies will remain as per their respective regulations.
Resolution of Ambiguities: If any ambiguity or difficulty arises in implementing the ordinance, the government may issue further clarifications or amendments via a gazette notification, ensuring consistency with the ordinance.
The notification underscores the government's commitment to ensuring clarity and uniformity in the age limit for government job recruitment.
Kamrul Islam Placed on 8-Day Remand in Murder Case
Advocate Kamrul Islam, a member of the Awami League Presidium, has been placed on an 8-day remand by a Dhaka court in connection with the Abdul Wadud murder case filed at New Market Police Station.
On Tuesday (November 19), the police submitted a remand application, and after a hearing, Judge Ziadur Rahman Jumman approved the remand.
Kamrul Islam was arrested late on Monday (November 18) around 11 p.m. from a residence in the Uttara-12 sector of the capital. He was detained overnight at the Detective Branch (DB) office.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into substantial illegal assets allegedly held by Advocate Kamrul Islam, his wife, and his children, both domestically and internationally. According to ACC’s Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Md. Aktarul Islam, the decision to investigate was made at the ACC headquarters on October 14.
ACC sources claim that Kamrul Islam, a former Food Minister, State Minister for Law, and Member of Parliament for Dhaka-2, accumulated massive wealth illegally in his and his family members’ names. During his tenure as State Minister for Law, he allegedly took millions in bribes through corrupt hiring practices in lower courts. As Food Minister, he reportedly misappropriated significant government funds by procuring substandard wheat from Brazil through corrupt deals.
Abdul Wadud was killed during clashes in the New Market area amid anti-discrimination student protests. Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, several ministers, state ministers, and Awami League leaders have been arrested in various cases filed at different police stations.
Battery-Run Rickshaws Ordered to be Banned Within 3 Days
The High Court has ordered the ban on battery-powered rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area within three days.
A High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi issued the order on Tuesday (November 19).
In total, about 1.2 million rickshaws are currently operating in the capital. A large part of which is battery-powered. In addition, many old pedal-powered rickshaws are being mechanized by installing batteries.
Battery-powered rickshaws are more common in the capital's narrow streets than on the main roads. These rickshaws also ply on the main roads when they get the opportunity. The number of battery-powered rickshaws is higher in the capital's Khilgaon, Manda, Basabo, Maniknagar, Rampura, Badda, Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Kadamtali, Sabujbagh, Shyampur, Demra, Mohammadpur, Basila, Uttara, Bhatara, Dakshinkhan, Uttarkhan, Moynartek, Mirpur, Pallabi areas.
