Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has emphasized that the police will not serve as a tool for any political party or group to engage in unlawful activities.
Speaking as the chief guest at the passing-out parade of the 40th BCS Police Cadre’s probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, he stated that Bangladesh belongs to all its citizens, not to any particular party, group, or community.
He reiterated that the Bangladesh Police are independent employees of the republic who operate under the law. They have to ensure public security and uphold the rule of law, not serve political agendas or obey unjust and illegal orders. He urged the newly appointed officers to uphold this principle throughout their careers.
Addressing the probationary officers, he emphasized professionalism, sincerity, dedication, and responsibility. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that people do not face harassment when seeking assistance at police stations.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury encouraged the officers to embrace the spirit of recent anti-discrimination movements and uphold the honour of the police force. He firmly advised them against becoming subservient to political influences or engaging in unprofessional or unlawful conduct.
"This marks the completion of your one-year foundational training," he said. "From today, you will step into the field as well-trained, capable, and disciplined police officers, committed to enforcing the rule of law and serving the public. I welcome you to this new journey and congratulate you on your impressive parade performance today."
The foundational training for the 40th BCS batch’s 63 officers and three officers from the 38th BCS batch, totalling 66 probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police, began on October 20, 2023. The passing-out parade was initially scheduled for October 20, 2024, with over 1,500 guests invited. However, it was abruptly cancelled the night before.
A second attempt to hold the ceremony on November 24 was also cancelled. On December 15, 25 probationary officers were issued show-cause notices for alleged disciplinary violations. Then, just two days before the final parade, on February 21, six of them were dismissed. Today, February 23, the passing-out parade was successfully conducted with 57 officers from the 40th BCS batch and three from the 38th BCS batch, totalling 60 participants.
The event was attended by Bangladesh Police Inspector General Baharul Alam, Bangladesh Police Academy Principal Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan, and other dignitaries, including Major General SM Asadul Haque (Area Commander of Bogura Cantonment and the 11th Infantry Division), Professor Dr Mohammad Jawadul Haque (Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi Medical University), Khondkar Azim Ahmed (Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner), Additional IGP (HRM) Abu Naser Mohammad Khaled, and RMP Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian.
