A stage is being prepared on the road in front of the Chief Advisor's residence, Jamuna, to press for the demand for the trial of Awami League leaders, cancellation of the party's registration, and a ban on its political activities. Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), has called on people from all walks of life to take to the streets after Friday prayers to participate in this movement.
Hasnat made this announcement at a press conference during the NCP's ongoing sit-in protest in front of Jamuna on Friday morning (May 9).
Criticizing the interim government, Hasnat said, "By delaying the trial of the Awami League, the interim government is giving the party an opportunity to reorganize. The Awami League is carrying out clandestine attacks in a terrorist manner. Our hope was that the first and foremost reform of this government would be to ban the Awami League as a terrorist organization. We have heard that many advisors are also unwilling to ban the Awami League."
Warning against any attempts to reorganize the Awami League, he stated, "We do not see the Awami League as a political party. No more excuses will be tolerated. A clear roadmap for immediately banning the Awami League must be announced."
Hasnat further said, "I want to clearly tell Dr. Muhammad Yunus that we will not leave the streets until the Awami League's registration is cancelled and they are banned."
The NCP chief organizer added, "Bringing together people of different opinions, parties, and all those against fascism, we will stage a sit-in in front of this Jamuna after the Friday prayers and will return home only after the Awami League is banned."
He called on everyone, regardless of their political affiliation, to gather on the road in front of Hotel InterContinental after the Friday prayers.
The protest demanding a ban on the Awami League, which began at 10:00 PM on Thursday in front of the Chief Advisor's residence, Jamuna, is still ongoing. Top leaders of the NCP, including its convener Nahid Islam and Nasiruddin Patwari, joined the protest last night. Over eleven hours have passed since the demonstration began.
As of 9:00 AM on Friday, hundreds of NCP activists were seen protesting. They were repeatedly chanting slogans demanding a ban on the Awami League.
Around 8:00 AM, leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami joined the protest in front of Jamuna. Jamaat leaders, led by the Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South, Shafiqul Islam Masud, participated in the demonstration.
