The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has agreed to a proposal by the Consensus Commission that limits an individual to serving no more than ten years as Prime Minister.
However, the party does not agree with the commission's proposal for a constitutional appointments committee.
Salahuddin Ahmed, a standing committee member of the BNP, announced this on Wednesday (June 25) after a meeting of the Consensus Commission.
Ahmed stated that the BNP has agreed to the core principles of the 5th Amendment and the new proposal regarding the prime ministerial term limit, but a full consensus has not been reached on all points.
Regarding the constitutional appointments committee, he said that the existing law should suffice by establishing a commission or search committee.
The objective is to reform it to ensure accountability and free it from the influence of the executive branch, eliminating the need to create a new body in the constitution.
He further added that there's no point in weakening the executive branch without reforming the law. The fact that one party became autocratic doesn't necessitate reducing the executive's power.
Therefore, the BNP does not agree with this appointments committee. Discussions were held regarding the ten-year limit for the Prime Minister, and the BNP agrees with this proposal.
