Viqarunnisa students’ demo rolls into second day
The students and guardians of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College have been continuing their demonstration on the second consecutive day on Wednesday, demanding punishment and removal of its principal and accused teachers over the suicide of its 9th grader Aritree Adhikari.
A number of students and guardians took position in front of the main gate of its Bailey Road branch in the morning and were staging demonstration chanting different slogans against the accused.
They demanded exemplary punishment of the accused for scolding Aritree that led her to commit suicide.
They also demanded to bring the accused under trial after publishing the probe report within three days as per the directive of the Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid.
A case was filed against three teachers of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, including its Principal Naznin Ferdous, over the suicide of Aritree Adhikari.
The two others accused are school’s morning shift in-charge Jinat Akhtar and class teacher Hasna Hena.
Addition Deputy Commissioner of Motijheel Zone Shibli Noman said Dilip Adhikari, father of victim, filed the case with Paltan Police Station on Tuesday night accusing the trio of provoking Aritee to committing suicide.
Amid widespread protests over the incident, morning shift in-charge Jinat Akhtar was suspended and she was served a show-cause notice, asking why action should not be taken against her.
Two separate probe committees have been formed to probe the suicide incident.
On Tuesday, a three-member probe body was formed to investigate the suicide incident. The committee led by Professor Mohammad Yusuf, director of Dhaka Regional Education office, has been asked to submit report within three-day.
Deputy Director Shakhawat Hossain of Dhaka Regional Education office and Dhaka district education officer Benzir Ahmed are the two other members of the committee.
Besides, the school authorities formed a three-member probe committee which was asked to submit its report within three days.
The High Court on Tuesday has asked the Education Ministry to form a five member committee to look into the incident and it was asked to submit the report within one month.
Adhriti Odhikari, daughter of Dilip Odhikari, reportedly committed suicide at her Shantinagar residence in the city on Monday.
The suicidal incident took place as teachers allegedly rebuked Adhriti and her father for carrying mobile phone during examination.
