BNP's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, has emphasized the need to guarantee that every voter can cast their ballot without fear or uncertainty.
Speaking at the biennial conference organized by Comilla Metropolitan BNP at Comilla Town Hall Field on Tuesday (February 25), he stressed the importance of a fair and secure voting process.
"BNP has fought for people's rights, endured enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and wrongful imprisonment. These sacrifices must not go in vain. It is not enough to merely ensure the right to vote; it must also be safeguarded so that every citizen can exercise their franchise without concern," Tarique Rahman stated.
Addressing concerns over the interim government, he remarked, "There are growing doubts among the public regarding those in power. However, we want this government to succeed because stability is essential for the progress and well-being of the nation. Right now, inconsistent statements from different members of the government are fueling uncertainty across the country. To secure a better future for the people, ensuring political stability is crucial."
Tarique Rahman also underscored the significance of elections for BNP, saying, "As a political party, BNP naturally seeks elections. Our primary objective is to engage with the people, earn their trust, and secure their votes. Some critics argue that BNP is overly focused on elections, but believing in democracy and electoral politics means advocating for fair elections. We must question why a fundamental democratic process is being portrayed as unusual. At this moment, we must also consider who benefits if elections are delayed in Bangladesh."
Highlighting the need for democratic practices, he asserted, "By upholding democracy, we can protect our country and people from conspiracies. The more we promote democratic values, the better we can safeguard the nation from hidden threats."
The conference was presided over by Comilla Metropolitan BNP Convener Udbatul Bari Abu, with Member Secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu serving as the moderator. BNP Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu delivered the keynote speech, while special guests included BNP’s Comilla Divisional Organizational Secretary, and Principal Selim Bhuiyan, among others.
