Students have been protesting across the country for a four-point demand, including the cancellation of quota system in government jobs and the implementation of merit-based recruitment circular. Netizens are giving opinions in favor and against. This time filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki shared his opinion about the matter on his social media account.

The Facebook post by Farooki did not last long. After a while, the post was taken down. It is believed that he deleted the post to avoid controversy. In the post, Farooki wrote, 'Stop encouraging meritless state system in the name of casting quotas.'

Expressing solidarity with the movement, Farooki wrote, 'Red salute to all those who are in this movement. I'm trying to stay away from all the tension. But if I don't say these words, I will remain a criminal in my face. When my daughters grow up, they will say, Daddy, what were you doing when such were happening?'

Notably, there was a 56 percent quota in government jobs. In 2018, there was a big student movement in different educational institutions of the country, including Dhaka University, demanding this quota reform. In the face of that movement, on October 4 of that year, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a circular canceling all types of quotas. As a result, the quota system in government jobs was abolished.

However, in 2021, some freedom fighters' children filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the part of the circular to cancel the freedom fighter quota. After hearing the writ petition, the court on June 5 declared that part of the circular illegal. As a result, the quota was upheld. The students were outraged. They took to the streets again to demand the quota cancellation. After a few days of protests before Eid ul-Adha, the protesters gave the government an ultimatum till June 30 to meet their demands. But they did not get any response from the government and marched to a movement from July 1.
