Renowned filmmaker James Cameron, the visionary behind Titanic and Avatar, has decided to leave the United States following Donald Trump's re-election as president. Unable to reconcile with the political shift, Cameron has officially become a citizen of New Zealand, finding solace in his new home.
In an interview with a New Zealand media outlet, Cameron expressed his concerns, stating that under Trump's leadership, the US has strayed far from decency.
"I find it terrifying. Everything that once stood for integrity is now being overturned. The United States has long upheld certain values, but now even its own citizens are struggling to recognize them. It all feels hollow, and I fear they'll strip the country down for profit as quickly as they can," he said.
Regarding Trump’s constant presence in the media, Cameron added, "I don't want to see his face on the front page of every newspaper, every single day. It’s exhausting and unpleasant. That's one of the things I appreciate about New Zealand—here, bad news doesn’t dominate the headlines. In the US, it feels like watching an endless car crash in slow motion."
Reflecting on his move, he shared, "I grew up in Canada, and New Zealand reminds me a lot of home. There's a deep sense of mutual respect among people here, and that’s something I truly value."
