For the past few years, fans have been eagerly waiting to see the life of legendary cricketer Sourav Ganguly brought to the big screen — from his iconic cricketing moments to his personal life. The excitement has only grown over time. It was recently confirmed that Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao will portray the "Prince of Calcutta". The question of who would play his wife, Dona Ganguly, has sparked much speculation.
Initially, Ganguly's daughter, Sana, expressed her preference for Tripti Dimri to play her mother. However, recent developments reveal a surprising twist.
Although Tripti Dimri's name had been circulating for some time, multiple sources now confirm she will not be part of the project. According to a report by Anandabazar Patrika, the screenplay for Sourav Ganguly's biopic is nearly complete, and the casting process is in full swing.
Casting director Mukesh Chhabra has officially stated that Rajkummar Rao will take on the role of Sourav Ganguly, a choice backed by both the film's director, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Ganguly himself.
Chhabra also clarified why Tripti Dimri was ultimately not cast as Dona Ganguly. Despite her popularity, her appearance doesn't align with Dona's distinctive Bengali features. Given Dona's strong Bengali identity, the team decided to cast a leading Bengali actress for the role.
Mukesh Chhabra traveled to Kolkata on April 3 to finalize the casting. He aims to find an actress who can bridge the worlds of Bollywood and Tollywood. His search is being supported by Tollywood Federation President Swarup Biswas and Purple Movie Town's head, Pritimoy Chakraborty.
On April 4, Chakraborty posted on Facebook that several major joint projects are in the works. That same day, Chhabra was spotted on the set of the film Raktabeej 2, where Mimi Chakraborty is currently playing the lead role. Insiders say Mimi is Chhabra's top pick to portray Dona Ganguly.
The news has set off a wave of speculation in the entertainment industry. However, neither Mimi Chakraborty nor Mukesh Chhabra has officially commented on the casting decision yet.
