12 killed, at least 60 injured in Mumbai billboard collapse

At least 12 people lost their lives when a huge billboard collapsed in Mumbai, India during a dust storm. At least 60 others were injured in this incident.

On Tuesday (May 14), the information was reported by several Indian media including Times of India, India Today, NDTV.

According to reports, the accident took place near a fuel station in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area on Monday (May 13) evening. The house-shaped billboard was opposite the fuel station. Amid a heavy dust storm, the billboard broke and landed right in the middle of the fuel station. In addition to people, some cars standing at the petrol pump were crushed.

After the accident, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), India's National Disaster Management Force, rushed to the spot and conducted rescue operations. A three-hour effort cleared most of the debris. Eight bodies had already been removed from the wreckage, Gaurav Chauhan, an inspector with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said.

Four more bodies are still buried inside the debris, he added.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde has promised to help by Rs 5 lakh to each families of those killed in the tragic accident. Besides, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the state government has ordered a detailed investigation about the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
