12 killed as minibus falls into ditch in India
At least 12 killed and many injured when a passenger minibus fell into a ditch in India. The death toll is likely to rise as the condition of some of the injured is critical.
The accident took place on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag on Saturday (June 15).
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Commandant Manikant Mishra said the passengers were going to Chopta from Ghaziabad on Saturday morning. Around 11:30 pm, the accident occurred while turning a bend on the mountain road near Rudraprayag town. The driver is believed to have lost control. As a result, the car rolled down the mountain and fell into the Alaknanda river.
Local administration officials and members of the State Disaster Response Force reached the spot after receiving the information. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital. The condition of four of them is critical. They have been admitted to EMS in Hrishikesh.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkarsingh Dhami has expressed grief over the incident. He ordered an investigation. On his official account (former Twitter), he wrote, 'I pray to God, may he shelter the souls of the dead at his feet. May he give strength to the family of the deceased to bear this suffering. I am praying to Baba Kedar for speedy recovery of the injured.
