This is Rahul Gandhi's first constitutional post. His allies also supported the Congress' decision. There was no Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha for the last 10 years. Because, to get the post of Leader of Opposition, each party had to win 10 percent of the total number of seats or 54 seats in the Lok Sabha. No opposition party has won so many seats in the last 10 years. The Congress won 99 seats this time. As a result, they got the post of Leader of the Opposition.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written a letter to Pro-Tem Lok Sabha Speaker, Bhartruhari Mahtabin informing him that the party has nominated Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition, allies have also accepted the Congress's decision. Rahul Gandhi entered the Lok Sabha in 2004 after winning from Amethi constituency. Then there was the UPA government at the Centre for 10 years. The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had requested Rahul to become a minister many times. But he did not agree.

Rahul Gandhi became Congress president in 2017. In 2019, Rahul resigned after the Congress suffered a debacle in the Lok Sabha elections. After that, he did not take charge of the team. He did not even take charge as the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha. This is the first time he holds a constitutional post.
