A two-story school collapsed during morning classes Friday in north-central Nigeria, killing 22 students and sending rescuers on a frantic search for more than 100 people trapped in the rubble, authorities said, news agency AP reported.

Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency said rescue, health and security forces were sentd to the scene. Many students were killed in the incident.

Musa Ashoms, State Commissioner for Information and Communications, said about 120 people were trapped. Many have been rescued. The government has ordered local hospitals to provide services without any paperwork and money so that the injured can get quick treatment.

The state government has blamed the school's poor infrastructure and location near the riverbank for the tragedy. At the same time, there have been calls for the closure of schools whose infrastructure has become weak to avoid such incidents.
