President Murmu's Africa Visit Highlights India's Growing Economic Ties
India’s growing partnership with Africa is crucial for the economic advancement of both regions, as well as the broader Global South. President Droupadi Murmu’s upcoming state visit to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi from October 13-19 highlights India’s deep commitment to strengthening ties with the continent, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This marks the first visit by an Indian Head of State to these three nations.
MEA Secretary for Economic Relations, Dammu Ravi, emphasized the significance of this visit, especially following the African Union’s induction as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023. "Africa is central to the Global South, and Prime Minister Modi has been actively advocating for its inclusion. This visit underscores our dedication to bolstering these partnerships, which are critical to both our growth and that of the Global South," Ravi stated in a press briefing.
The African Union's membership in the G20, achieved at the New Delhi Summit, is a key milestone in global cooperation. The strong economic ties between India and Africa are reflected in trade volumes nearing USD 100 billion annually, alongside investments ranging between USD 70 to 80 billion. Furthermore, Ravi highlighted the importance of India’s 33.2 million-strong diaspora in Africa, which further deepens bilateral relations.
Ravi also noted the importance of development cooperation, including lines of credit, grants, capacity building, and collaboration on critical minerals. "The president’s visit demonstrates our commitment to not only enhancing our economic relationship but also advancing development agendas globally and within the UN framework," he added.
In parallel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit in Laos on October 10-11, further reflecting India's active engagement on multiple international fronts.
