A powerful earthquake struck a remote area of Tibet in China on Tuesday, killing at least 53 people. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, caused many houses to collapse, according to reports from Chinese state media.

The tremor was felt in Kathmandu, the capital of neighboring Nepal. China's Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported that the earthquake occurred at 9:05 AM local time, with its epicenter in Dingri County near the Nepal border.

While CENC reported the earthquake's magnitude as 6.8, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated it was 7.1 on the Richter scale.

China's state broadcaster CCTV reported that strong tremors were felt in Dingri County and surrounding areas, with several buildings near the epicenter collapsing.
