British MP Tulip Siddiq allegedly threatened a journalist for questioning the authoritarian actions of Sheikh Hasina during her tenure as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. At the time, the journalist was pregnant, and Tulip made comments about her physical condition.

This incident resurfaced with a 2017 video after Tulip's name came up in connection with corruption involving the Awami League and the Sheikh family in Bangladesh.

The British news outlet The Telegraph published a report on this video on Friday, January 10.

Tulip Siddiq, a member of the Labour Party in the British Parliament and currently serving as the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, is the daughter of Sheikh Rehana, Sheikh Hasina’s sister.

In the video, Tulip is seen being asked by the journalist about the case of missing British-Bangladeshi lawyer Barrister Arman during Hasina’s regime. In response, Tulip can be heard warning the journalist, “Be very careful.”

Tulip, in a threatening tone, stated, “I am a Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn. I am a member of the British Parliament. Be very careful. I am not Bangladeshi, and I have no knowledge about the cases of the people you are talking about. This is where I end my statement.”

Towards the end, Tulip addressed the pregnant journalist and producer Daisy Ayliffe, saying, “Thank you for coming, Daisy. I hope your baby will be fine because childbirth is very difficult. See you.”

Following this, one of her assistants placed a hand in front of the camera, asking the journalists to stop recording. The assistant described the journalist's questions as irrelevant and reckless, trying to move the journalists away from Tulip.

Channel 4 News’ Chief Correspondent Alex Thomson described Tulip Siddiq’s remarks as seemingly threatening. Meanwhile, the MP later admitted that her words had been misinterpreted.

The affected journalist, Ayliffe, shared her experience again in a post on X last week. She said, “When I asked Tulip Siddiq about her political connections with Bangladesh in 2017, she told me to ‘be careful.’ Following the incident, the MP lodged complaints with Ofcom, the police, and my bosses. However, none of the complaints stood because, fortunately, the incident was recorded on camera. Had it not been recorded, I might have lost my job.”

The matter did not end there. Failing to get the journalist fired, Tulip allegedly used her power and administration to harass Arman’s wife.

It is reported that in 2017, a Channel 4 journalist had questioned Tulip, Sheikh Hasina’s niece, about the disappearance of Arman. Being a British citizen and MP, the journalist believed that a call from Hasina might help free Arman. However, Tulip was infuriated by the journalist's question.

In another report, Barrister Arman told the Financial Times that just hours before Channel 4 aired the interview, law enforcement visited his home, telling his wife to stay silent. They questioned her about her contacts with people from abroad and harassed her as if interrogating a terrorist.

Barrister Arman further stated, “The question about me to Tulip somehow offended the Sheikh family. That’s why the administration behaved in such a manner.”
