At least 11 people have died in a devastating wildfire in Los Angeles, California. Thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed. Residents are facing severe challenges, including traffic jams and suffocation from thick smoke as they try to escape the raging flames. Investigators are currently examining the possible causes of this catastrophic event.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, lightning strikes are a major cause of wildfires in the U.S. However, investigators believe this was not the case in California.

The wildfire started in the eastern part of Los Angeles County, particularly around the Palisades area and Eaton, but there is no evidence of lightning strikes in those regions. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed by the fire in these areas.

Investigators are now considering two other common causes: intentional arson and sparks from electrical power lines.

John Lentini, owner of Scientific Fire Analysis in Florida, has experience investigating major wildfires in California, including the 1991 Oakland Hills fire. Lentini explained that changes in the fire's scale do not necessarily alter investigative methods.

Lentini further stated, “This was once a small fire. People will focus on identifying where it started, what ignited it, and thoroughly examining the surrounding area to determine the cause.”

So far, there are no signs of arson or evidence that the fire was sparked by electrical lines.

Terry Prosper, Communications Director of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), said that if there’s any suspicion of electrical involvement in wildfires, authorities must report it to the commission via email. CPUC staff then investigate whether state laws were violated.

Edison authorities noted that in addition to lightning, arson, and electrical sparks, wildfires can also start from burning trash and fireworks. Moreover, accidental fires can spread from numerous sources.

According to a BBC report, in 2020, a couple caused a massive wildfire by using a special kind of smoke-generating firework during an event. That fire burned approximately 36 square miles, destroying five houses and 15 additional buildings, and resulted in the death of a firefighter.

The fires in Eaton and Palisades are still burning, although they were slightly contained by Friday. Wind speeds have decreased, but there is no forecast for rain. The fire continues to scorch miles of dry land. Only a shift in weather conditions might bring the wildfire to a halt.
