18,000 Indians to be Deported Amid U.S. Immigration Crackdown
Long before taking office, Donald Trump was known for his strong stance against illegal immigration. As the 47th President of the United States, he has issued several executive orders targeting immigrants, including measures to revoke birthright citizenship and declare a state of emergency at the border.
These actions are already having an impact. To maintain good relations with the U.S., several countries, including India, are addressing the issue of illegal immigrants. The Indian government has agreed to take back 18,000 of its citizens living illegally in the U.S.
A Bloomberg report on Wednesday, January 22, highlighted this development. According to the report, the Indian government is prepared to work with the Trump administration to identify and repatriate all Indian nationals living illegally in the U.S. This decision by the Modi government signals a desire to cooperate with the new U.S. President while avoiding a trade war.
The U.S. has identified approximately 18,000 illegal Indian immigrants, all of whom will be sent back to India. The Indian government will begin the process of verification and deportation. However, the actual number may be much higher, as the exact count of illegal Indian immigrants in the U.S. is unclear.
It is not precisely known which states in India have the most people on the deportation list. However, it is believed that most of the illegal immigrants in the U.S. are young people from western India, particularly from Punjab and Gujarat.
One of Trump's notable campaign promises was to take strict measures against illegal immigration. Accordingly, just hours after taking office on Monday, January 20, he pushed for ending birthright citizenship and deploying troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
India hopes that in exchange for its cooperation in deporting illegal immigrants, the Trump administration will protect legal immigration channels used by Indian citizens, such as student visas and the H-1B program for skilled workers. According to official data, nearly three-quarters of the 386,000 H-1B visas approved in 2023 were issued to Indian nationals.
India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that as part of India-U.S. cooperation on immigration and mobility, both sides are working to prevent illegal immigration. This is being done to create more opportunities for legal immigration from India to the U.S.
