Janet Petro Becomes NASA's First Female Administrator
Janet Petro has been appointed as the new administrator of the United States space agency, NASA, making history as the first woman to hold this position. On Monday, January 20, the day he assumed office, President Donald Trump appointed her as NASA's acting administrator.
Since its establishment in 1958, NASA has never had a woman in charge. Petro succeeds NASA’s 14th administrator, Bill Nelson, and will serve until a new administrator is officially appointed.
A NASA statement noted, "Janet Petro is now the acting administrator of NASA. She will oversee NASA's operations, budget, and programs until a new administrator is confirmed by the U.S. Senate."
In December 2024, Trump nominated entrepreneur and commercial astronaut Jared Isaacman to be the next administrator of NASA. His appointment is currently in process.
Previously, Petro served as the 11th director of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. She has overseen civilian services, policy implementation, mission operations, and various agency programs at Kennedy Space Center.
As acting director of Kennedy Space Center, Petro transformed it into a multi-use spaceport, NASA noted.
She also served in Washington, D.C., at NASA headquarters as the acting director of the Office of Evaluation and as deputy associate administrator for 12 months.
Petro graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1981 and earned her Master’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University’s Metropolitan College. She began her career as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army.
