Elon Musk, the world's wealthiest individual and a minister in the administration of newly elected US President Donald Trump, has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for his significant contributions to advancing freedom of speech. The Nobel Committee has confirmed the nomination and notified Musk via email.

The announcement was made by Slovenian politician and European Parliament member Branko Grims, who shared the news through a post on the social media platform X on January 30. Grims included a copy of the Nobel Committee's email in the post, emphasizing that freedom of speech is a fundamental human right. He noted that Musk has long worked to protect and expand this right. Musk's team formally submitted a petition to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which accepted the submission and officially nominated him for the prestigious award.

Musk, known for leading Tesla, the electric vehicle giant, and SpaceX, the space exploration company, also owns the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which he acquired in 2023.

In December 2024, Grims publicly stated in Brussels that Musk deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to safeguard free speech. He confirmed at the time, "I will propose to the Nobel Committee that Musk should win the Nobel Peace Prize next year." Less than a month later, the Nobel Committee announced Musk's nomination.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the six awards presented annually in fields such as Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Economics, and Peace. While the Norwegian Nobel Committee awards the Peace Prize, the other five categories are presented by the Swedish Royal Academy.
