The US State Department has welcomed the interim government's steps to ensure the safety of all, including minority communities, in Bangladesh.
US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce made the remarks in response to a question from a questioner at a regular press conference on Wednesday (March 19) local time in the United States.
The questioner said that US intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard has warned about the growing threat of Islamic extremism and efforts to establish an Islamic caliphate in Bangladesh. However, he (Tulsi) did not directly blame the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus - the Yunus government has also strongly denied these concerns, calling them untrue.
The questioner also mentioned that a huge pro-Caliphate rally was held at Dhaka University yesterday.
The journalist further said, in view of the US government's ongoing concerns, is the US considering taking strict measures such as sanctions against the Yunus government?
In response, US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said, we condemn any incident of violence or intolerance against members of minority communities in any country and welcome the steps taken by the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of all in Bangladesh. That's what we are seeing. That's what we expect. And that will continue.
