Widespread violent protests erupted for the second day in Los Angeles, USA, surrounding the crackdown on alleged undocumented immigrants. On Saturday, June 7, clashes broke out between federal agents and protesters in the Paramount area.
Locals claimed that more immigrants were detained from outside their homes. Security forces, clad in riot gear and gas masks, used tear gas to try and control the situation.
Protesters chanted, "ICE, get out of here. We know who you are. You have no place here." One placard read, "No human is illegal."
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem warned that strict action would be taken against anyone obstructing law enforcement.
Tom Homan, President Donald Trump's principal advisor on border policy, informed Fox News that the National Guard would be deployed on Saturday evening.
The protests began after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted raids across the city last Friday, detaining at least 44 individuals. Following this, protesters chanted "Let them go, let them stay" in front of the city's Edward R. Roybal Federal Building.
The DHS stated in a press release that nearly a thousand protesters surrounded the federal building, attacked ICE officers, slashed tires, and damaged the building and government property.
White House Deputy Chief Stephen Miller described the events as an "insurrection against American law."
The Trump administration has set a target of arresting 3,000 alleged undocumented immigrants daily. However, some legal immigrants are also being detained in these operations, leading to legal challenges.
