The Supreme Court's Appellate Division Chamber Court has suspended the bail granted by the High Court to former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in a sedition case.
The order was issued on Tuesday (May 6) after a hearing on an appeal filed by the state. Barrister Anik R Haque and Arshadur Rauf represented the state, while MK Rahman argued on behalf of Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Last Wednesday, the Chamber Court had temporarily suspended the High Court's bail order. That suspension was later lifted, and a new hearing date was set, with the court noting that it would make a decision after hearing arguments from the defense.
Meanwhile, on Monday (May 5), a Chattogram court ordered Chinmoy Das Brahmachari to be officially shown as arrested in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam. The virtual hearing was conducted by Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin Mahmud, with Chinmoy attending from jail.
Additionally, on Tuesday (May 6), the same court ordered Chinmoy to be shown arrested in four other cases involving allegations of obstructing police work and vandalism. These orders were also given following virtual hearings.
The sedition case led to a violent incident last year on November 26 at the Chattogram court premises after Chinmoy was denied bail. During the unrest, lawyer Saiful Islam was brutally attacked and killed. Chinmoy was taken into custody on that day.
The sedition case was originally filed on October 31, 2024, by Firoz Khan, then-General Secretary of the BNP's Mohora Ward unit in Chandgaon, at Kotwali Police Station. The complaint named Chinmoy and 18 others. Firoz Khan was later relieved of his position in the BNP.
