The trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with the July massacre case will be broadcast live from the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday, June 1, according to the prosecution.
Tribunal Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the development on Saturday afternoon, stating that formal charges will be submitted against Sheikh Hasina and two others— former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
The prosecutor added that the hearing on the admissibility of these charges will be aired live on Bangladesh Television (BTV).
Earlier in the day, during a seminar at the National Press Club marking International Week of the Disappeared, Chief Prosecutor Advocate Tazul Islam said the charges relate to crimes against humanity committed during July and August. He confirmed that the formal indictment will be filed on Sunday.
He further stated that the trial proceedings for these alleged crimes will be visible by December and emphasised that the process will be conducted transparently and impartially.
The investigation into the case was completed on May 12. At a press briefing that day, the Chief Prosecutor disclosed that evidence had been found to support five serious charges against Sheikh Hasina, including ordering, inciting, and provoking the killings of more than 1,400 people during protest crackdowns.
Similar charges have also been brought against Kamal and Mamun.
