Nahid Paves the Way for the First Bangladeshi Restaurant in Europe
In the 1990s, Nahid Hasan left Bangladesh for Sweden, driven by dreams of higher education and a better future. Life, however, tested him with numerous challenges. But Nahid never wavered, often reminding himself, "I can do it." His persistence paid off when he founded Europe's first Bangladeshi-owned restaurant with a distinctly Bangladeshi identity, bringing his homeland's cuisine and culture to the forefront.
Nahid arrived in Europe to study but soon grappled with financial difficulties. He shared his story with RTV Online: "I came to study, but I couldn't manage the expenses. To make ends meet, I took a part-time job at a restaurant. What began as necessity evolved into passion."
Balancing his fashion design studies with his restaurant job, Nahid noticed Stockholm's limited Indian dining scene. Encouraged by his younger brother, he decided to save money and open a restaurant. During the post-2000 Iraq War, he found an affordable space named "Shanti" (peace).
The early days were tough. For six months, customers were scarce, and the business barely stayed afloat. But with unwavering support from his wife, Nahid persevered. Everything changed after a glowing review in a prominent Swedish newspaper. The next day, diners flooded in, marking the beginning of Nahid's success story.
Following this breakthrough, Nahid opened his second restaurant, Shanti Soft Corner, which also gained popularity for its flavorful dishes and impeccable quality.
Nahid's journey took a pivotal turn when his daughter asked why their restaurant bore an Indian name instead of a Bangladeshi one. Inspired, he decided to celebrate his heritage by launching Touch of Bengal, Europe’s first Bangladeshi restaurant with a Bangladeshi name and owner. The restaurant introduced locals to authentic Bangladeshi dishes like sizzlers, biryani, nihari, and fish bhuna, earning widespread acclaim.
"Cooking is an art," Nahid said. "Like doctors heal patients, I aim to delight customers with food. I never copied menus; instead, I crafted innovative dishes."
Nahid continued to innovate, launching Ultimaths and Gossip, his fourth and fifth restaurants, specializing in street food like Fuchka, Chotpoti, and Khichuri. His commitment to quality and creativity won him numerous awards, including the London Best Chef Award three times, the Asian Curry Award four times, and the prestigious Best Chef in Europe accolade from the European Parliament in 2024.
His culinary excellence has earned him the opportunity to cook for European dignitaries, including ambassadors and royalty.
Nahid's contributions go beyond restaurants. He has ventured into beverage production with a wine and two beers named Shanti. He also authored a book available in Swedish, German, and Dutch, with another in progress.
"Bangladesh was once seen as a flood-prone, impoverished nation," Nahid reflected. "Now, people recognize its potential and excellence."
Despite his 35 years abroad, Nahid dreams of opening a signature restaurant in Bangladesh. "I'll make it happen, Inshallah. Pray for me," he said.
Nahid Hasan's journey, marked by resilience and innovation, is a testament to the power of perseverance and the richness of Bangladeshi culture.
