BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged political parties to prioritize addressing public issues over merely discussing state and institutional reforms.

Speaking at an iftar event hosted by the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) at the Bangladesh Shooting Sport Federation Convention Hall, Tarique emphasized that beyond debates on the caretaker government, electoral system, and constitutional framework, political discourse should focus on solving real-life problems affecting citizens.

"Why aren’t we discussing essential issues like controlling prices, improving healthcare, and boosting production?" he questioned.

He stressed that while reforming governance structures—such as limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure and restoring the caretaker government—remains significant, equal importance should be given to economic and social challenges. "Isn’t it also reform to change the market system, enhance production, and improve healthcare and education?"

Highlighting rising commodity prices, Tarique criticized the lack of meaningful discussions among political parties on practical solutions. He urged parties to present concrete proposals on how to keep essential goods affordable by revamping market systems and increasing production.

Tarique acknowledged ideological differences among democratic parties but underscored their shared goal of restoring democracy and ensuring fundamental freedoms. He recalled that the BNP and its allies had proposed a 31-point reform plan over two years ago, long before reform became a mainstream topic.

He welcomed ongoing discussions on key issues, including a bicameral parliament, balancing power between the President and Prime Minister, and governance reforms. “If elected, we will implement these changes in line with public aspirations.”

Addressing environmental concerns, he called for urgent reform proposals to combat pollution, which severely affects public health. “Political parties must present their strategies to tackle air and noise pollution, ensuring a safer environment.”

Tarique also stressed the need for reforms in education, industrial development, water supply, and the energy sector. “Without an effective education system, how can we build a prosperous nation?”

The event was attended by NDM Chairman Bobby Hajjaj, AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju, and other political leaders.
