BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called upon the interim government to swiftly announce a roadmap for the upcoming elections.
At the same time, he stated that the BNP has always stood for representatives elected directly by the people. However, a situation is being created now where even demanding an election seems to be treated as a crime.
He made these remarks while joining a virtual discussion organised on the occasion of the founding anniversary of Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party on Friday, May 2.
The BNP acting chairman said that depoliticisation could pose a serious threat to the country's democracy. He said, "Why is there a delay regarding the election? This is creating concern and dissatisfaction among the public."
He added that the roadmap for elections should be announced promptly, and it is the responsibility of the interim government to take the initiative to bring political parties before the public.
Expressing concern over the return of autocratic forces, he questioned whether the interim government has taken any action against those who violated the constitution. "If the current administration fails to act, the next elected government will have to hold those individuals accountable," he said.
He also welcomed the 25 new political parties that entered the scene after August 5. He said, "Despite ideological differences, we hope all parties will come together in the interest of the nation."
Tarique emphasised that all political parties support reforms. "Ignoring them only pushes the country further into depoliticisation," he warned.
He concluded by saying that on matters of national interest, political parties are united. "The current government cannot avoid responsibility through blame games. The new government that will be formed must take action against the fugitive autocrats," he further stated.
