Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain erupted in joy after the High Court rejected a writ petition challenging the Election Commission's gazette notification that declared him the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
The verdict was delivered on Thursday (May 22) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury.
As the news broke, BNP leaders and activists gathered at Kakrail Mosque intersection began celebrating, chanting slogans like, "Breaking news: Ishraque is Mayor!" and "Victory for the people!"
They soon launched a jubilant rally from the Kakrail intersection toward Matsya Bhaban, expressing their support and enthusiasm.
For eight consecutive days leading up to the verdict, Ishraque's supporters had been staging a sit-in in front of Nagar Bhaban, demanding that he be formally handed over the mayoral duties.
On Thursday morning, BNP leaders, activists, and members of affiliated organizations were also seen gathered at Kakrail intersection. Many had remained there overnight, continuing their protest in support of Ishraque Hossain.
