BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has expressed hope that democracy will soon be restored in Bangladesh.
She made this remark while addressing a discussion meeting virtually on Thursday (May 29), held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Ramna. The event was organised to mark the 44th death anniversary of the party’s founder and former President, Ziaur Rahman. BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman served as the keynote speaker.
Khaleda Zia said, "The democratic journey for which Ziaur Rahman laid down his life still faces obstacles at every step. But I firmly believe that very soon, democracy will be re-established in Bangladesh. Let this be our solemn pledge on the occasion of his martyrdom anniversary. I urge all BNP leaders, activists, and the people of the country to move forward in a disciplined and united manner toward this goal."
She added, "Every year, this day in May brings back a flood of painful memories for our family. But the grief was not ours alone—the entire nation mourned the loss and felt the absence of a guiding leader. The name of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman is deeply woven into the very fabric of Bangladesh’s birth and history."
Referring to Ziaur Rahman’s role in the Liberation War, she said, "From Chattogram, he declared the country’s independence and cemented his name as an inseparable part of the nation's destiny. And it was in Chattogram, too, that he sacrificed his life as a fearless, honest, visionary, and patriotic president. He was a pioneer of democracy, national self-reliance, press and judicial independence, and development. He shaped a unique sense of nationalism in our country."
In her message to party members, Khaleda Zia said, "Always remember that the best way to honour Shaheed Zia is by upholding and implementing the politics of democracy and inclusive development that he championed. We pray for the eternal peace of his soul."
