BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has returned to Bangladesh from London today after four months. She was accompanied by Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the party's Standing Committee and her personal physician. Upon arrival, she hinted at the imminent return of the party's Acting Chairperson, Tarique Rahman.
Speaking to reporters at her Gulshan residence "Firoza," Khaleda Zia, through Dr Zahid Hossain, stated that Tarique Rahman is expected to return to the country soon to take a more direct leadership role.
Dr Zahid stated, "Zubaida Rahman has returned after 17 years of being barred by the government. Their daughter, Zaima Rahman, recently participated in a political event in the United States. Insha Allah, the day is not far when Tarique Rahman will return to lead the movement from the ground."
He further added, "Tarique Rahman is currently providing leadership from the UK, not only to the BNP but also in the broader effort to restore democracy. His return to Bangladesh is just a matter of time."
In response to questions about Zubaida Rahman, Dr Zahid confirmed that she returned to Bangladesh with Khaleda Zia. "It's not yet certain how long she will stay, but she will eventually go back, organise everything with her husband and daughter, and return permanently."
Begum Khaleda Zia had travelled to London in January for advanced medical treatment. She arrived back in Dhaka on Tuesday (May 06) morning aboard an air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar. Throughout her stay in London, Dr Zahid Hossain was by her side.
Upon her safe return, Khaleda Zia expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Bangladesh. Dr Zahid mentioned that although the former prime minister endured a long 17-hour journey and is physically fatigued, she remains mentally strong. He emphasised that she continues to be committed to standing by the people of Bangladesh, just as she always has.
