The opposition alliance has finalized its leadership structure for the upcoming legislative session.
Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been named the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting of the 11-party alliance on Tuesday, shortly after 297 newly elected lawmakers took their oaths on the Parliament premises.
Alongside Shafiqur Rahman, Nahid Islam, the Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has been appointed as the Opposition Chief Whip.
Further strengthening the opposition front, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher will serve as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
The appointments reflect the results of the February 12 polls, where the Jamaat-led alliance emerged as the primary opposition bloc.
Shafiqur Rahman, who was elected from the Dhaka-15 constituency, and Nahid Islam, representing Dhaka-11, are expected to lead a vocal opposition against the newly formed BNP government.
Dr. Taher, elected from Cumilla-11, completes the leadership trio. The formal announcement was made by Md Abdul Karim, the Jamaat chief for Gaibandha and newly elected MP, who noted that a joint press conference by the 11-party alliance would follow to provide further details on their parliamentary strategy.
