After a goalless first half, Liverpool seemed in danger of being held to a third consecutive Anfield stalemate in a relentless and furious match that was fueled by the wind and fierce rain on Merseyside.

The best chance Salah had in the first half was to convert a penalty kick, but the forward, who will now play for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations, tapped in a cross for the first goal and then finished off a second one in the last moments of play.

His initial goal was his 150th Premier League goal for the Reds, but Alexander Isak's five-minute counterattack, which came after Anthony Gordon's deft work to get in behind the hosts' defense, saw him curl the ball home.

Liverpool put in a lot of effort to take the lead once more, and eventually Curtis Jones did it. However, Cody Gapko's scuffed effort following a great Salah ball gave Liverpool breathing room.

However, Newcastle struck back when Sven Botman headed home a corner to level the score 3-2. Salah then heroically sent Martin Dubravka the wrong way to seal the victory.

Liverpool had drawn their last two home games against Manchester United and Arsenal, but had won their first seven Premier League games at Anfield this season.

They have a five-point lead over Arsenal and Manchester City, who have a game in hand. They also lead Aston Villa by three points.

Newcastle, who were missing nine first-team players, remain ninth.
