The 2024 Copa América is the ongoing 48th edition of the Copa América, the quadrennial international men's soccer championship organized by South America's football ruling body CONMEBOL. The tournament is being held in the United States from June 20 to July 14, 2024, and is co-organized by CONCACAF.
The tournament started with 16 teams on June 20, but now the final four are almost decided. The semifinal schedule is being set, and the stakes have ramped up yet again.
We are about to find out who will compete for the Copa America 2024 trophy.
From the quarterfinals onwards, it's been a case of loss, and you are out. We are at a single-elimination knockout stage, where one poor performance can spell the end of the road.
Some dreams have already fallen by the wayside, including home hopes after the USA failed to make it out of the group. Other big names are sure to follow.
The path to glory is pre-determined in the knockout stages, depending on the teams that qualify and on which side of the bracket each side winds up. The semifinal matchups shape up with teams slotting in based on their finish in their respective groups (group winner or group runner-up), and then on each team coming through their designated quarterfinal.
Copa America 2024 semifinal schedule
The matchups in the semifinals were predetermined and the bracket filled out as each team won their respective quarterfinal. Schedule dates and times are listed below:

Teams in Copa America 2024 semifinals and bracket
The bracket for the Copa America comes in two halves. And each will produce a finalist. The bracket shapes up as a result of the group stage, which concluded on July 2, and then the quarterfinals.

Brazil down Ecuador, Suarez farewell ends in stalemate
Real Madrid forward Rodrygo scored the only goal as Brazil boosted their lackluster 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador on Friday.
Rodrygo's deflected 30th-minute strike was enough to secure all three points for Brazil, who were languishing in sixth place in the South American qualifying standings before Friday's result in Curitiba.
The five-time World Cup winners moved up to fourth place with 10 points from seven games after their third win of the qualifying campaign, but remain eight points adrift of leaders Argentina.
With the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico expanded to include 48 teams, the top six finishers in South American qualifying will be guaranteed a place at the tournament. The seventh-placed South American team enters an inter-confederation play-off.
Brazil has struggled in recent international tournaments, losing in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and failing to progress past the last eight at this year's Copa America.
The lack of fluency that has characterized their recent form was back in evidence against Ecuador on Friday, where despite dominating possession for long periods they created little in the way of clear-cut scoring chances, with only three shots on goal.
The breakthrough came at the half-hour mark, when Rodrygo collected the ball on the edge of the area, took a touch, and then shot from 25 yards. The Real Madrid attacker's strike appeared to clip Ecuador defender Willian Pacho before flying in off the post.
Frustrating farewell
In other South American qualifiers on Friday, Luis Suarez bade a frustrating farewell to international football as Uruguay was held to a 0-0 draw by Paraguay in Montevideo.
Suarez, 37, announced on Monday he was stepping down from international duty after a glittering 17-year career for Uruguay that saw him finish as the country's top scorer with 69 goals from 143 appearances.
Suarez was feted in a pre-game ceremony which saw him gathered on the field with his family to receive tributes from fans, as well as a video message of congratulations from close friend Lionel Messi.
"Uruguay is bigger than any player. Starting tomorrow I will be another fan," an emotional Suarez told fans in an address to the stadium.
But the former Barcelona and Liverpool star, who now plays in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, was unable to add a 70th goal to his international tally in Friday's farewell game at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.
Despite enjoying 65% possession, Uruguay was unable to find a way through a dogged Paraguay defense in a disjointed match littered with some 24 fouls.
Suarez, whose career at international and club level was dogged by controversies such as his ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup, was one of four Uruguay players to be shown a yellow card in a fractious encounter.
The result left Uruguay in second place in the standings with 14 points from seven games, four points behind leaders Argentina.
In Friday's other qualifying game, third-placed Colombia needed a late goal from Liverpool's Luis Diaz to salvage a 1-1 draw with Peru in Lima.
Alexander Callens had fired Peru into a shock lead on 68 minutes, but Diaz headed in from close range eight minutes from time to give Colombia a share of the points.
The result leaves Colombia in third place in the standings with 13 points from seven games.
Tamim to Join Commentary Box in India Test Series
Cricket icon Tamim Iqbal is set to return to the commentary box. Tamim Iqbal has frequently expressed his interest in commentary. He has previously done commentary during the BPL and the Test match against New Zealand in Mirpur.
This time, he may be seen with a microphone during the upcoming India-Bangladesh series in September, which will be held abroad.
Tamim debuted with the microphone in the commentary box during the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium last year.
Tamim created a stir in the cricketing community by stepping into the combo for the first time as a special guest during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) game between Chattogram Challengers and Khulna Tigers.
The veteran batter has been away from cricket since his last appearance in the national jersey during the New Zealand home series in September 2023.
Tamim made a surprising decision to retire in July of last year but later changed his mind at the request of the former Prime Minister just before the ODI World Cup in October.
However, he opted out of the tournament and took a break after he was refused to participate in all the matches.
In a recent development, the newly elected BCB president Faruque Ahmed expressed interest in bringing the country's best opener back into the national fold or into the board.
The 35-year-old retired from the shortest format of cricket in 2022 after pulling out of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.
In a career spanning 78 T20Is, Tamim scored 1,758 runs at an average of 24.08 with seven half-centuries and the only century by a Bangladeshi in the format.
Only Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan have scored more runs in the format than Tamim but have lower averages.
Currently, Tamim Iqbal is out of action due to fitness issues. Although he is not with the national team, he will travel to India for the series. He will be providing commentary for the series. This will be the first time Bangladesh's opening batsman will provide commentary for an international match outside the country. Discussions are ongoing with the broadcasting channel Star Sports regarding this.
This month, Nazmul Hossain Shanto's team will tour India for two Tests and three T20 matches. After the two-Test series against India, the three T20 matches will be held on October 6, 9, and 12.

Ministry of Youth and Sports Ousts 42 Federation Presidents

The ministry had previously dismissed the presidents of the Chess, Kabaddi, and Bridge Federations after the fall of the Hasina government. Now, the remaining federations have been added to the list of changes.
Most of the federation presidents were government appointees, with individuals from the former government occupying key posts in various sports bodies, except for football and cricket. The latest move marks a significant restructuring in the country's sports administration.

Chief Advisor Accords Reception to National Cricket Team
Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus accorded a reception to the Bangladesh cricket team at his office at Tejgaon today (September 12) following their 2-0 Test series victory against Pakistan in August-September 2024.
Welcoming the cricketers at the reception, the Chief Advisor called their success in Pakistan a historic one and said the whole nation was proud of their achievement.
"I spoke to the captain after the victory but I was eagerly waiting to meet you all personally and congratulate you on behalf of the nation," he said while addressing the players.
Prof Yunus reminded the players of the power of sports in uniting a nation and recalled his recent engagement in the Paris Olympics where he acted as an advisor and ambassador.
The Chief Advisor revealed that he has been invited by Italy to play a similar role during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.
National cricket team captain Najmul Hossain Shanto thanked Prof Yunus for hosting a reception for them at his office and said his words would encourage them to achieve further success.
"Every player is happy to come here. It will inspire us," he said.
Shanto said the hard work of players and coaching staff was pivotal to their success in Pakistan.
Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, hailed the players for bringing success at a difficult time.
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Faruque Ahmed, its director Najmul Abedin Fahim, and Chief Executive Officer Nizam Uddin Chowdhury were, among others, present on the occasion.
