Bangladesh's past memories on West Indian soil are not very pleasant. In recent Test series, they suffered heavy defeats. In 2018, the Tigers were bowled out for just 43 runs at the Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. The two teams will face off on the same ground today.

However, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite believes the past won't influence the upcoming series. According to him, past statistics are just numbers and won’t dictate the future. He is focused on making a strong start to this new series.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference yesterday, Brathwaite said, “Everything in the past is history. We are playing against a talented Bangladesh team. Whatever has happened is in the past. Tomorrow (today), whatever we do, we need to ensure a good start.”

Brathwaite showed respect for the Bangladesh team, saying, “It won’t be easy. Past performances are in the past, so tomorrow (Antigua time), we have to be prepared. We are excited to take on this challenge of playing good Test cricket.”

For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz will lead the team in this Test as regular captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is unavailable for the series. In addition to Shanto, the team will also miss veteran cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim, who is sidelined due to injury. Moreover, experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan recently retired from Test cricket, leaving a notable gap in the team.

Speaking at the press conference, Miraz acknowledged the absence of senior players, saying, “As you mentioned, we don’t have senior players at the moment. But we still have experienced players like Mominul [Haque] and Litton Das in the team. I believe we are much better than the team we were two years ago. We are all very positive. We’re not thinking negatively but focusing entirely on our game.”

Regarding Shakib’s absence, Miraz commented, “These things happen. Sometimes, we have to play without senior players. Mushfiq is out due to injury, and Shakib has decided to retire. It’s challenging, but I still believe we can achieve something good. We are a strong team now. Some young players have come up, and they have good opportunities to perform in these conditions.”
