Zakir Leads Sylhet to Second Victory in BPL
Sylhet Strikers secured their second win in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with an eight-run triumph over Khulna Tigers at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today, thanks to an outstanding unbeaten knock of 75 by Zakir Hasan.
Zakir had also played a pivotal role in Sylhet's first victory earlier in the tournament, scoring a blistering 27-ball 58 to guide the team to a three-wicket win over Dhaka Capitals after three consecutive losses.
In today’s match, Zakir’s 75 not out off 46 balls, which included three fours and six sixes, was a career-best effort. It propelled Sylhet to a total of 182/5, a score Khulna struggled to chase, ultimately ending their innings at 174/9.
Opener Rony Talukdar contributed with 56 off 44 balls, including five fours and two sixes, forming a key 106-run partnership with Zakir for the third wicket. After Sylhet lost two early wickets for just 15 runs in 4.2 overs, Zakir and Rony stabilized the innings and set the stage for a formidable total.
Khulna’s Abu Haider Rony, who claimed the most wickets for his team with two for 25, dismissed Rony, but Zakir continued his aggressive batting. Aaron Jones contributed a quickfire 20 off six balls, and captain Ariful Haque added a vital 21 not out from 13 balls to ensure a strong finish for Sylhet.
For Khulna, the chase was difficult from the start as they lost early wickets. Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Reece Topley, and Ruyel Miah all picked up two wickets each, making regular inroads into the Khulna lineup. Nahidul Islam provided the initial breakthrough by dismissing Naim Sheikh for 11. The Sylhet bowlers steadily dismantled the middle order, leaving Khulna needing 19 runs from the final over with three wickets in hand.
Khulna's hopes were briefly lifted when Abu Haider Rony hit two consecutive boundaries, but Ruyel Miah dismissed him on the very next ball. Things went from bad to worse when Mahidul Islam Ankan (28) was run out, dashing Khulna’s chances of a successful chase.
For Khulna, Williams Bosisto top-scored with 43, and Mohammad Nawaz made 33, but it wasn't enough to secure victory. This loss marked Khulna's second consecutive defeat after winning their first two matches.
Sylhet's win puts them in a strong position in the tournament, and Zakir’s form continues to be a crucial factor in their success.
