At the start of the South American Under-20 Championship, Brazil was thoroughly defeated by their archrivals, Argentina. Lionel Messi’s successors crushed the Seleção with a dominant 6-0 victory.
On Saturday, January 25, Claudio Echeverri, who has signed with Manchester City, scored a brace to lead his team to victory. Ian Subiabre, Agustin Ruberto, and Santiago Hidalgo each scored one goal, while one of the goals was an own goal.
In Venezuela, 10 teams are divided into two groups for the South American Under-20 Championship. In Group B, Brazil and Argentina faced off in their first match on Saturday.
Although fans expected a fierce battle between the two teams, the match turned out to be one-sided. Brazil’s junior team, the Seleção, was no match for Argentina at the Estadio Misayel Delgado. Argentina dominated possession, holding the ball for 63% of the game, and took 13 shots, 8 of which were on target. In contrast, Brazil took 9 shots, but only managed to get 2 on target.
Brazil’s next match will be against Bolivia on Monday, January 27, at 3:00 AM Bangladesh time. Two and a half hours later, Argentina will face Colombia.
The match started with Brazil conceding a goal in the 6th minute. After receiving the ball from Valentino Acuña, Ian scored in Brazil's net. Just one minute later, Echeverri doubled the lead, making it 2-0.
Instead of fighting back, Brazil made matters worse in the 11th minute when Igor Sereto scored an own goal, making it 3-0. Before halftime, Brazil was spared further misery by the Junior Albicelestes.
However, after the break, Argentina increased the pain for Brazil. Echeverri's team doubled their lead with goals from Ruberto in the 52nd minute, Echeverri in the 54th, and Hidalgo’s final goal in the 78th minute.
