Deal inked to purchase 10 locomotives from S. Korea

The government signed an agreement to purchase 10 locomotives from South Korea.

The Bangladesh Railway signed the deal with Hyundai Rotem Company of South Korea at Rail Bhaban in presence of Railways Minister Mujibul Haque on Thursday. Reports UNB.

Hyundai Rotem Company of Korea will supply the locomotives at a cost of 297crore, 63 lakh, 30 thousand and 560 taka.

K W AngKyun Yoon, director of Hyundai Rotem Company and Additional Director General of Bangladesh Railway Md. Shamsuzzaman signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

The minister said that the 10 locomotives will be purchased within 24 months while a deal will be signed to purchase 20 more.

Besides, the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase on Wednesday approved a total of 10 procurement proposals, including one to import 70 meter-gauge diesel electric locomotives from South Korea.

He also said that there was a previous deal with Korea to buy 250 coaches which will be brought by July 2019.

A total 80 railway stations will be reopened within several months. Already 60 stations have been reopened, which were shut during the tenure of the BNP government, said the minister.

‘Revolutionary changes will be brought in the rail sector. Progress will be visible within 2-3 years,’ Mujibul Haque added.
