Railway Ministry Cancels Lease of 24 Privately-Run Trains
The railways ministry has canceled the lease of 24 trains, which are currently being operated by private operators. The contract was terminated due to violating the conditions of the contract.
Mohammad Nahid Hasan Khan, Director of Public Relations at Bangladesh Railways confirmed the cancellation of the lease to the media On Tuesday (November 12) afternoon.
These 24 trains were reportedly being operated by various companies owned by former Chhatra League leader Salahuddin Ripon and his family members.
It is alleged that Ripon was involved in Awami League politics and contested the last parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Barishal-5 constituency. He was operating the commuter trains for a long time by bribing some ministers of the Awami League government and dishonest railway officials.
Meanwhile, companies owned by Ripon and his family members won contracts to operate 24 trains for four years but continued to operate them for more than a decade. Even after the expiry, the railway ministry extended their contract without any fresh bidding.
