35pc voter turnout in 3rd phase of upazila polls: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Kazi Habibul Awal has said that the voter turnout in the third phase of the sixth upazila parishad election in 87 upazilas was more than 35 percent. He said he would have to wait for a few more hours to know the actual information about the vote casting.

The CEC made the announcement at a press conference at Election Commission in Agargaon on Wednesday (May 29) afternoon.

The voting began at 8:00 am and ended at 4:00 pm without any break. EVMs were used in 16 upazilas. In the rest, ballot papers were used. There were a total of 1,152 candidates in 87 upazilas. Of them, 397 candidates were for the post of chairman. Besides, 456 candidates are contesting for the vice chairman post and 299 for the reserved vice chairman post.

Kazi Habibul Awal said the election was held in a free and fair manner. The law enforcers were very active around the election.

He also said thirty people were arrested for trying to rig the vote. Six people were injured in the clash. Another presiding officer fell ill and died.

Notably, The elections are being held in four phases in 485 upazilas out of 495 upazilas of the country. The first phase of 139 upazila elections was held on May 8. About 36 percent votes were cast in these upazilas. On May 21, the second phase of voting was held in 156 upazilas. Voter turnout was 38 percent. The fourth phase of voting will be held on June 5.
