The movement for quota reform in government jobs has stirred up the country. Students clashed with police and BCL activists in different places. Six people were killed. Hundreds were injured.
The clashes took place between noon and afternoon on Tuesday (July 16). In this situation, BGB has been deployed in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rangpur, Bogra and Rajshahi.
According to Rtv correspondents, three people were killed in Chattogram, two in Dhaka and one in Rangpur in the clash. Two of the dead were students, a pedestrian and the identity of the remaining three is yet to be ascertained.
Three people have been killed in a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and quota reform activists in Chattogram demanding quota reform in government jobs. At least 20 people were injured in the incident.
CMP Commissioner Saiful Islam said three people were killed in the clash. One of them was a student of Chittagong College, another pedestrian and the other died while undergoing treatment.
Dhaka
An unidentified youth was killed in a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and students demonstrating for quota reform in government jobs on the opposite side of Dhaka College. On the other hand, a bloody body was recovered from in front of Dhaka City College.
Their bodies were recovered on Tuesday (July 16) afternoon and evening.
Confirming the matter, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost, said the injured youth was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead. There were marks of injuries of sharp weapons under his ears and in different places of his face. The passer-by who was initially brought to the hospital could not identify him.
He also said that the doctor on duty declared him dead around 7 pm after being rescued from in front of Dhaka City College.
Rangpur
A student of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) was killed in a clash with police in Rangpur.
When the quota reform students of Rokeya University went towards the campus from the Lalbagh area of the city with a procession. When they tried to enter the campus, they were stopped by police. As a result, protesters clashed with the police. Police fired rubber bullets at the students. Abu Sayeed, a student of the 12th batch of English Department of BRUR, was killed in the attack.
Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Moniruzzaman said, 'Students of different schools, colleges and other educational institutions joined the quota protesters. They clashed with the police. Many policemen were injured. I heard that one person died, I can't say how he died.'
Notably, at the press conference organized on the visit to China, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, 'Why is there so much anger over the Liberation War? The grandchildren of freedom fighters will get nothing, then will the grandchildren of Razakars get everything?' Students of Dhaka University began their protest on Sunday night, accusing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of calling the quota reform protesters 'children or grandchildren of Razakars'. The movement then spread across the capital. Now the movement has spread across the country.
