Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal in India said, 'After looking at the interests of the people of West Bengal, a decision will be taken regarding the renewal of the Teesta water and Ganga water pacts with Bangladesh.

She revealed this in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Monday (July 29).

Mamata Banerjee said, 'India's BJP government has unilaterally decided on the Teesta water distribution pact. The Farakka treaty regarding the distribution of Ganga water will be renewed in 2026. The committee is being fixed in 2024. In the committee, there are 9 representatives of the central government of India and one representative of West Bengal.

She said, 'The livelihood of the people of West Bengal depends on the Farakka Barrage community. I also gave water to Bangladesh. But I will take the decision in the interest of West Bengal. Because people here have elected me. Government of India is making advance agreements for its own political interests. West Bengal cannot participate in any discussion.

The Chief Minister of West Bengal said, 'In 1996, the Indian government discussed with the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Jyoti Basu, during the agreement regarding the distribution of Ganga-Padma water. Later he was also felicitated by the Bangladesh government. But this time West Bengal has been completely left out. Government of India should first fulfill the responsibility of maintenance of Farakka barrage. Let them discuss with the West Bengal government.

In the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Mamata also proposed to build an India-Bhutan River Commission based on the model of India-Bangladesh River Commission.
