The Advisory Council of the government has given its principal and final approval to the draft of the 'Interim Government Ordinance, 2024.'

This approval was given during a meeting of the Advisory Council held on Thursday, September 19, presided over by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

In a press release issued by the Cabinet Division in the evening, it was stated that, following the massive repression and genocide carried out by the previous Awami League government during the anti-discrimination student movement, widespread protests erupted across the country, uniting students and the public regardless of political affiliation.

At one stage of the movement, amid demands for safety and justice, the unified student and public uprising called for the resignation of the government. As a result, the then-Prime Minister resigned and left the country on August 5, submitting her resignation to the President. On August 6, the President dissolved the 12th National Parliament.

The press release further stated that, in light of the emerging situation, to address the constitutional crisis, protect public interest and national security, maintain the functioning of the economy, and ensure the continuation of executive governance, the President sought the opinion of the Supreme Court under Article 106 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

Exercising its advisory jurisdiction under Article 106, the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court provided its opinion on August 8 through Special Reference No. 01-2024, stating that, “To fill the constitutional vacuum, the President may, in case of emergency, appoint a Chief Advisor and other Advisors to carry out the executive functions of the state as an interim measure. The President may administer oaths to the appointed Chief Advisor and other Advisors.”

Furthermore, the statement mentioned that, considering the existing situation, the interim government was formed on August 8 based on the doctrine of necessity, reflecting the sincere will and desire of the people at all levels to resolve the constitutional crisis. The interim government was established based on the proposals of the representatives of the uprising student-public coalition and to fulfill the reform aspirations of the state.

The draft of the Interim Government Ordinance, 2024, was prepared to regulate the powers and responsibilities of the interim government, the rank and privileges of the Chief Advisor and Advisors, their resignation, and other related matters. The Advisory Council has given its final approval to the draft of the 'Interim Government Ordinance, 2024.'

Flood in Feni, people plunge into darkness

In various places of Kulaura and Juri upazilas, the dams of the rivers broke and overflowed which flooded 62 villages. Sunamganj The rain in Sunamganj and the water of other rivers including Surma in the upstream hills is increasing. The water in the Surma river rose by 12 cm on Wednesday. Water continues to rise. Rivers are already full to the brim. Therefore, it is feared that a flood situation may occur if the water rises. Khagrachari The 40-year-old bridge of Singinala village collapsed in Khagrachari due to continuous rains and landslides over the last few days. The road communication system of Mobachari Union with Mahalchhari has been closed. Meanwhile, the road communication between Khagrachari and Sajek, Longadu, and Baghaichari in Rangamati has also been closed due to the floods caused by the landslides. About five thousand families are still underwater in the district. Habiganj Due to continuous heavy rains and downpours from the Indian state of Tripura, the water of the Khawai River in Habiganj is flowing over the boundary line. The water flowed over 195 cm at Machulia point of the Khoai River on Wednesday at 5 pm. In such a situation, the city defense embankment is at risk.
