Yunus-Biden Emphasize Close Dhaka-Washington Partnership: White House
On Tuesday, September 24, at 9 PM Bangladesh time, U.S. President Joe Biden met with Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly session at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Following the meeting with Dr. Yunus, the White House released a press statement (readout).
The statement mentioned that President Joe Biden met with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to congratulate him on his recent appointment as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. Both leaders reaffirmed the close partnership between the United States and Bangladesh, built on shared democratic values and strong ties between the peoples of both nations.
According to the readout, President Biden welcomed further engagement between the two countries and pledged continued U.S. support for Bangladesh as it implements its new reform agenda.
Earlier, Dr. Yunus' press wing also shared that President Biden assured full cooperation from the U.S. for Bangladesh and Dr. Yunus' interim government.
During the meeting, Dr. Yunus explained to President Biden how Bangladeshi students had stood up against the previous authoritarian regime, even sacrificing their lives. He emphasized that his government is working diligently to rebuild the nation and may need U.S. support for this effort.
Dr. Yunus also presented Biden with a book titled The Art of Triumph, featuring pictures of murals painted by students during the mass uprising.
President Biden remarked that if students can make such sacrifices for their country, then even more should be done for them in return.
