World Bank to Provide $3.5 Billion Loan to Bangladesh for Reform Work
The World Bank will provide Bangladesh with a $3.5 billion loan on easy terms to support the implementation of reforms by the interim government.
On Wednesday (September 25), local time in New York, World Bank President Ajay Banga met with Bangladesh's Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, at the UN headquarters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. During the meeting, the World Bank President announced this assistance.
Ajay Banga, a long-time friend of Professor Yunus, stated that at least $2 billion will be new loans, while $1.5 billion will be reallocated from existing programs.
He mentioned that the World Bank will provide this loan to assist in reforms related to digitization, alleviating the liquidity crisis, as well as in the energy, power, and transportation sectors.
During the meeting, Professor Yunus requested the World Bank's support for the interim government's comprehensive reform programs.
He also called for innovation in the World Bank's loan programs, stating that this is a significant opportunity for the country’s rebuilding efforts.
The World Bank President discussed energy cooperation in South Asia and how hydropower generated in Nepal and Bhutan can be shared with neighboring countries, including India and Bangladesh. Energy and Power Advisor Fauzul Kabir Khan was present at the meeting.
