International Day of Older Persons Today
Today is International Day of Older Persons. Like the rest of the world, Bangladesh is also celebrating "International Day of Older Persons 2024." This year's theme is ‘Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide’.
The United Nations General Assembly, on December 14, 1990, decided that October 1 would be celebrated annually as International Day of Older Persons. In line with this groundbreaking decision, Bangladesh has been observing the day since 1991, along with the rest of the world.
On the occasion of the day, President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus have extended their heartfelt greetings to the elderly citizens of the country in their messages.
To mark the day, the Department of Social Services, under the Ministry of Social Welfare, has organized various programs. These include rallies, discussions, special supplements in national newspapers, sending messages about the dignity of the elderly through mobile operators, broadcasting on electronic media, and extensive campaigns on social media.
In a message, President Md. Shahabuddin said that the contribution of older people to the advancement of civilization is undeniable. With the progress of medical science and the improvement of socio-economic conditions, the number of elderly people is increasing in Bangladesh, as in the rest of the world. Article 15(d) of Bangladesh’s Constitution mentions the need to build a strong care and support structure for the growing elderly population.
In a separate message, Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus extended his heartfelt greetings to the country's elderly citizens, noting that due to the vast improvements in medical science, increased health awareness, and enhanced quality of nutrition and healthcare services, global death rates have decreased, and average life expectancy has increased. For the same reasons, the number of elderly people in Bangladesh has also significantly increased. Article 15(d) of Bangladesh’s Constitution highlights the need for social security for the elderly.
To commemorate the day, a rally will take place at 10:30 AM, starting from the Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association in Agargaon and ending at the Department of Social Services. The rally will be led by Social Welfare Advisor Sharmin S. Murshid and will include participation from the Ministry's Secretary, officials and staff of the Department of Social Services, elderly individuals, and representatives from various organizations working for the welfare of older persons.
After the rally, a discussion meeting will be held, presided over by the Director General of the Department of Social Services, Dr. Abu Saleh Mustafa Kamal.
