Lightning Kills 297 in Eight Months

The number of casualties due to lightning is increasing day by day in Bangladesh. In eight months of this year, 297 people have died due to lightning across the country. 242 of them are men. Among these, the highest number of people died in May, according to the "Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum." This information was released at the organization's office on the capital's Topkhana Road on Saturday (October 5).

According to the organization, from last February to September 30, 297 people died due to lightning across the country. 73 people were injured. Among the dead, there are 11 children, and 55 women. 6 of the women are teenagers. Of the total deaths, 242 were men. There are 17 juveniles among males.

According to the organization, one died by lightning in February. 9 people died in March. Among them 8 men and one woman. 6 people were injured in March. 6 of them are men. 31 people died in April. Among them are 20 men, 11 women, one child, and two teenage girls. A man was injured in April.

96 people died in May. Among them 79 men, 17 women, 2 children, 2 teenagers, and one girl. 28 people were injured in May. Among them 23 men and 5 women. 77 people died in June. Among them 61 men, 16 women, 5 children, and 7 teenagers among men. 14 people were injured this month. Among them 12 men and 2 women.

A total of 19 people died in July. Among them 1 female and 18 males. 10 people were injured. Among them, there is one female and 9 males.

A total of 17 people were killed by lightning in August. Among them three women and 14 men. Among them 1 child, 1 teenager and 1 teenager. In addition, two men were injured this month.

A total of 47 people died in lightning strikes in September. Among them, 41 are men and 6 are women. There are 2 children between the woman and the man. There are 4 juveniles among males and 2 juveniles among females. 12 people were injured this month. Among them, there are 10 males and 2 females.

How many were killed in which district?
This year the maximum number of 13 people died in Brahmanbaria. Besides, 12 died in Feni, 10 in Cox's Bazar, 13 in Jaipurhat, 13 in Habiganj and 10 in Gaibandha. Most cases of death due to lightning occurred during the harvesting of paddy, cutting of grass, bringing cattle, and various agricultural activities.

In eight months, 152 farmers died due to lightning during agricultural work. Among them, 18 people died just while bringing cows. Besides, 52 fishermen died while fishing. 11 people died while picking mangoes, 15 while traveling on empty roads, 27 while at home, 3 while lifting stones, 14 while playing in the courtyard of the house, and one while in the car.

Whenever we aim to permanently rid the country of fascism, some individuals and groups disguised as civil society stand in opposition. If necessary, we will resist them as well." Injured participants from the uprising were also present at the program. Earlier, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced plans to release the "July Proclamation" after the uprising. However, the organization withdrew this decision after the government declared its intent to issue the proclamation.

March for Unity / Family Members of Injured, Martyred Gather at Shaheed Minar

At the call of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, students, citizens, and families of the injured and martyrs of the uprising are gathering at Shaheed Minar to join the "March for Unity." Since Tuesday (31 December) morning, people from various parts of the country have started assembling at the Shaheed Minar area. During the gathering, students and citizens chanted slogans such as "Why are the killers free while my brothers are in the grave?" "Delhi or Dhaka, Dhaka," "Injustice will be swept away in a flood of blood,” “Abu Sayed, Mugdho, the battle is not over yet," and "Hang the killers, hang Hasina." Some were seen holding banners, placards, and flags as part of their preparation. Students and citizens from districts such as Chattogram, Natore, Panchagarh, and Sirajganj arrived early in the morning and took positions around Shaheed Minar and Dhaka University. Various groups of students were seen gathering in and around the Shaheed Minar. Many revolutionaries were also seen seated in chairs in front of it. Sheikh Hasina even viewed religious scholars as threats and attacked, sued, persecuted, and killed them." This prominent organizer of the anti-discrimination student movement further stated, "Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and many other individuals and organizations faced severe challenges under Sheikh Hasina's rule, which made it nearly impossible for them to live freely in independent Bangladesh. From our perspective, we want to say one thing: many of the narratives Sheikh Hasina tried to present about you and others are no longer believed by the current generation of Bangladesh. The present generation has enough conscience to identify and expel fascists." He also added, "The way we worked hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, and even at the planning table, we will continue to work unitedly in the future, prioritizing the country's interests above all to build the Bangladesh of tomorrow."
