Ambassador IWAMA Visits Rohingya Camps, Pledges Continued Support
Mr. IWAMA Kiminori, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, made his sixth official visit to the Rohingya camps, home to over 989,500 refugees. He toured the Ukhiya Specialized Hospital, Save the Children facilities, and UNHCR WASH projects.
Ambassador IWAMA also engaged with host communities in Teknaf and met with officials from the Refugee Relief & Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) and Armed Police Battalion (APBN).
Since the 2017 refugee influx, Japan has provided over $220 million in aid for food, healthcare, WASH, and shelter in Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char. Following recent flash floods, Japan allocated an additional $1 million to UNHCR and UNICEF for relief efforts.
Reflecting on the flood’s impact during his visit, IWAMA said, “The flood damage continues to affect lives physically and mentally, but I witnessed how Japan’s aid is being utilized effectively." He emphasized Japan's ongoing support for both refugees and host communities and participated in the inauguration of the Inpatient Department at Ukhiya Specialized Hospital.
With the crisis entering its seventh year, IWAMA reiterated Japan's commitment to addressing the Rohingya issue amidst competing global emergencies.
