Prof Yunus Urges BIMSTEC to Prioritize Youth, Climate, and Environment
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) to place greater emphasis on youth engagement, environmental protection, and addressing the climate crisis.
He made the remarks during a meeting with BIMSTEC Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.
Highlighting the achievements of young Bangladeshis during the successful July-August revolution, Prof Yunus said, “They are the future.” He announced plans to host a youth festival in Dhaka soon, expressing hope that all seven BIMSTEC nations would send representatives to participate.
Ambassador Pandey briefed Prof Yunus on BIMSTEC’s activities, noting that the group is working to transform into a more active regional platform. He praised Yunus’s leadership, saying it would energize the bloc’s activities.
“We are on the path to becoming a functionally more active organization,” Pandey said. “With your leadership, we can achieve significant progress.”
Although the BIMSTEC summit, initially planned for September in Thailand, was postponed, Pandey noted that the group has made strides with new ministerial meetings and agreements on maritime transport and energy cooperation. Environment and climate change have also become key focus areas.
Ambassador Pandey lauded the Three Zero Movement—spearheaded by Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate—and emphasized women-centered development as another core priority of BIMSTEC.
Prof Yunus pointed out the growing impact of the Three Zero initiative, sharing that Nepal alone hosts over 700 clubs, and social business hubs have been established in at least eight Indian universities.
