Dr. Yunus to be the Next BIMSTEC Chairman

Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, is set to become the next Chairman of BIMSTEC.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Special Envoy to the Chief Advisor, announced this information during a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in Bailey Road, Dhaka, on Wednesday.

The Chief Advisor is scheduled to depart for Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, on Thursday (April 3) to attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman indicated that a meeting between Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is possible on the sidelines of the summit.

He stated, "The Chief Advisor will be the next BIMSTEC Chairman. Therefore, discussions with the heads of all member countries regarding future actions are necessary."

The Chief Advisor will attend the Youth Conference on the first day of the BIMSTEC Summit and will address the main summit the following day. Additionally, he will hold meetings with various heads of state on the sidelines. Three Memorandums of Understanding and agreements are expected to be signed during the summit.

Also present at the briefing were the Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.

BIMSTEC stands for 'Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral, Technical and Economic Cooperation'. It is a regional alliance comprising several countries in South and Southeast Asia.

BIMSTEC was formed on June 6, 1997, in Bangkok during a ministerial-level meeting of Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The organization was initially named after the acronyms of the participating core member countries.
