Bangladesh has sent a diplomatic letter to India seeking a meeting between Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit.
Indian news agency ANI reported this information on Thursday (March 20th), citing Foreign Affairs Advisor Mo. Tauhid Hossain.
"We are trying to arrange a bilateral meeting between our two leaders on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit. We have made diplomatic contact with India regarding this," Foreign Affairs Advisor Tauhid Hossain told ANI.
Furthermore, multiple diplomatic sources in Dhaka and Delhi confirmed on Thursday night that the letter was sent on Wednesday for a potential meeting in Bangkok in the first week of next month.
The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the letter regarding the meeting between the top leaders of the two countries in Bangkok was sent to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday.
A source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the 6th BIMSTEC summit will be held in Thailand from April 2nd to 4th.
The Indian Prime Minister and the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh are expected to participate in this summit. The Chief Advisor will travel to Bangkok on April 3rd to attend the summit and is scheduled to return to Dhaka on April 4th.
Notably, Bangladesh had previously sent a letter seeking a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the interim government, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
However, the meeting did not take place at that time. If the meeting takes place in Bangkok this time, it will be the first meeting between the top levels of the interim government and India.
